Excess Proceeds

Another name for surplus funds: the amount a tax sale brings in above what was owed.

California statutes use the term excess proceeds. The concept is the same as surplus funds: money above the debt and costs that belongs to lienholders and the former owner.

Be wary of anyone charging large fees to recover excess proceeds; claim forms are usually available free from the county.
