Homestead

A property the owner lives in as a primary residence, often given tax breaks and legal protections.

Homestead status can lower taxes and change how a tax sale works, including the minimum bid and the notices an owner receives.

Whether a property had homestead status is shown on the assessor record. A homestead parcel at a tax sale often means an occupied home.

How it works by state

Florida
For Florida homestead property, the tax deed opening bid includes half of the assessed value.
