Bankruptcy Stay

A court order that automatically pauses collection actions, including tax sales, when an owner files for bankruptcy.

Filing a bankruptcy case creates an automatic stay. A county must stop the sale of an affected property, even on auction day.

A sale held in violation of a stay can be void, which is why counties withdraw parcels as soon as they learn of a filing.
