Chain of Title

The recorded history of a property's ownership, from transfer to transfer.

A title search follows the chain of title to confirm who owned the property and which liens and claims were recorded along the way.

Gaps or errors in the chain can cloud title even after a tax sale.

General information, reviewed 2026-10-12. Not legal advice. Rules change and each county publishes its own sale terms; confirm with the county before bidding.
