Recording

Filing a deed or lien with the county recorder so it becomes part of the public record.

A deed is recorded to give public notice of a transfer. Tax deeds are recorded by the county after payment, sometimes weeks or months after the sale.

Deadlines such as California's one-year window for excess proceeds claims start from the recording date.

General information, reviewed 2026-10-12. Not legal advice. Rules change and each county publishes its own sale terms; confirm with the county before bidding.
